On éprouve parfois le besoin de substituer à une série de données (cf. 130-2) résultant de l’observation, une série de valeurs plus régulière, dite ajustée1. Le principe de l’ajustement1, ou lissage1, consiste à faire passer une courbe régulière, au plus près de l’ensemble des points représentatifs de la série brute (131-1*). Dans l’ajustement graphique2, la courbe est tracée au jugé; dans l’ajustement analytique3, elle représente une certaine fonction préalablement choisie, dont les paramètres sont déterminés algébriquement, par exemple par la méthode des moindres carrés4, qui minimise la somme des carrés des écarts des observations à la courbe d’ajustement. Parmi les autres méthodes mathématiques d’ajustement, mentionnons celles qui font usage de la moyenne mobile5, pondérée ou non, et du calcul des différences finies6. Certains procédés d’ajustement peuvent être utilisés pour l’interpolation7, c’est-à-dire pour la détermination de points intermédiaires entre des points connus, ou pour l’extrapolation8, c’est-à-dire pour la détermination de points situés hors du champ d’observation.
